About
Frank Rieger. Data Science and AI student, currently teaching a car to see.
I am Frank Rieger, and online I go by bqckf1sh. This site is where the things I build end up, along with whatever I have concluded from building them.
I study Data Science and AI. Most of what I do outside of lectures goes into a Formula Student driverless team, where I work on perception — teaching 200 kg of carbon fibre to see cones and remember where they were. It gets it right most of the time, and that last clause is where the interesting work lives.
What I work on
Perception, and the unglamorous half that surrounds it: everything that happens to an image before a model ever sees it, and the distance between something that scores well on a recorded run and something that holds up on track at speed. Nothing about that distance is in the papers.
Python and C++ do the work — PyTorch for models, ROS 2 to move data between nodes, OpenCV for the pipeline in front, NumPy and pandas for the parts nobody demos. Linux and Docker underneath. Java turns up in my repositories because of coursework, not because I reach for it.
What I write about
Opinions with dates on them. If I change my mind later, the old post stays up and the new one contradicts it — that seems more honest than quietly editing the past.
Mostly: what breaks on the way from a working notebook to a system that runs without me watching it, why the boring infrastructure usually decides the outcome, and the things I got wrong the first time.
